SQL SELECT joins with logical operators

Introduction

In SQL, joins are used to combine rows from different tables based on a related column between them. The logical operators, such as AND, OR, and NOT, can be used in conjunction with joins to further refine the data retrieved from multiple tables.

INNER JOIN with Logical Operators

The INNER JOIN is the most commonly used join in SQL. It returns only the rows that have a match in both the tables being joined.

To use a logical operator with an INNER JOIN, we need to specify the condition using the WHERE clause. Let’s consider an example where we have two tables: customers and orders. We want to retrieve the customers who have placed an order in the last 30 days.

SELECT customers.customer_id, customers.name, orders.order_date
FROM customers
INNER JOIN orders ON customers.customer_id = orders.customer_id
WHERE orders.order_date >= DATE_SUB(CURDATE(), INTERVAL 30 DAY);

In the above example, we use the equality operator (=) to join the customer_id column from both tables. Then, we use the WHERE clause with the logical operator (>=) to filter the results based on the order date. This will give us the customers who have placed an order in the last 30 days.

OUTER JOIN with Logical Operators

Unlike INNER JOIN, OUTER JOIN returns all the rows from one table and the matching rows from the joined table. We can use logical operators with OUTER JOIN in a similar way as with INNER JOIN.

Let’s consider another scenario where we have two tables: departments and employees. We want to retrieve all departments along with the employees who are not assigned to a department.

SELECT departments.department_id, departments.name, employees.employee_id, employees.name
FROM departments
LEFT JOIN employees ON departments.department_id = employees.department_id
WHERE employees.department_id IS NULL;

In the above example, we use the LEFT JOIN to retrieve all departments and the employees who are not assigned to any department. We then use the WHERE clause with the logical operator (IS NULL) to filter out the rows where the employee’s department ID is NULL. This will give us the desired result.

Conclusion
