  3. Maintain the original relation by removing the attributes involved in the multi-valued dependencies. Replace them with foreign keys referencing the new relations created in step 2.

  4. Ensure that each relation is in a normalized form, typically by applying further normalization techniques like the Boyce-Codd Normal Form (BCNF) or Third Normal Form (3NF).

Example of Multi-valued Dependency Normalization

Let’s consider the following relation, Employees(Skill, EmployeeID, EmployeeName), where Skill represents the employee’s skill, EmployeeID is the unique identifier for each employee, and EmployeeName is the name of the employee.

Suppose we have the multi-valued dependency that an employee can have multiple skills. To normalize this relation, we can create a separate relation EmployeeSkills(Skill, EmployeeID) to hold the skills and their corresponding employee identifiers. Then, we modify the original Employees relation by removing the Skill attribute and replacing it with a foreign key referencing the EmployeeSkills relation.
